About the Event
Stockton’s Urban Waterfront Park represents one of the North East’s most ambitious town-centre regeneration projects, transforming Stockton-on-Tees by opening up the high street to the River Tees.
Replacing the former 1970s Castlegate Shopping Centre and Swallow Hotel, the park spans an area three times the size of Trafalgar Square. At its core, the project shifts the town centre's focus from declining traditional retail toward green space, community health, and vibrant culture.
A central feature is a 55-metre land bridge spanning Riverside Road, enabling seamless pedestrian movement from High Street down to the water’s edge. The park boasts a major riverside amphitheatre with 402 granite steps carved with an original poem by UK Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, creating a grand focal point for public gatherings.
Beyond its event spaces, the park offers three inclusive play zones complete with timber towers, water-play features, and wheelchair-accessible equipment.
