High Street Conversations: The Cost of Living vs the High Street

The economic situation is dire, and likely to only get worse. The cost of living crisis is the worst in a generation. It comes at a time of multiple problems for businesses across the UK and Ireland. Political uncertainty, an energy crisis, supply chain challenges, and labour shortages. However, the fall in household spending power makes these challenges much worse. While costs are increasing for businesses there is also severe pressure on spending, especially for discretionary products and services. The first High Streets Conversation following the summer break will take a deep dive on the challenges of inflation with insight from Movement Strategies and Visa before examining how two councils in Scotland are relieving pressure on low income households and the high street at the same time.
