Are Cool Spaces Now Essential to a Welcoming Destination in the Summer?

Following on from Heatwaves and High Streets Part 1, we need to know the public health impacts of a warming climate and how town and city centres need to respond to remain viable during Summer months.

In the short term, town and city centres need to provide comfortable environments for visitors, workers, residents, and others. This is not easy. With the Urban Heat Island effect, developing cool spaces for town centres will naturally exacerbate high temperatures without good design and management. But, as the climate gets hotter, this intervention could be crucial for sustaining footfall during Summer months.

This second part of a High Street Conversations double header on heatwaves will explore the operational and strategic considerations in delivering cool spaces to boost Summer footfall.
