We can't all have global airports, world-class concert theatres, a massive financial or biotech sector. So how do we compete? How do we get people to notice our places; how do we find something unique and authentic on which to build our city-brand?

BIDs don’t often have a say in infrastructure or macro-economic developments, but we can still do a huge amount to make our cities stand out on a global scale.

This conference looks at how we do this; how we can make our cities work for big events, how we can use art and food to attract eyeballs (and stomachs), how we can use the power of social media. And, in the afternoon, we’ll be deep in the weeds, talking about the urban cultures our cities already have and the hidden histories we can (re)discover to make our places distinctive and original.
