Many retail, leisure and hospitality businesses in Wales have enjoyed rates relief of 75% or more since the pandemic. However despite the severe economic challenges from staffing to pressure on household budgets, and despite the financial support offered by Westminster, the Welsh Government is reducing this relief to 40%. Understandably, this has angered the business community.
There is another side to this story. Public services in Wales are also under pressure. With concerns over the viability of local authorities and huge challenges for NHS Wales, the Welsh Government has decided these key services are too important to leave underfunded.
The Big Squeeze presents a significant problem for both high street businesses and the local authorities tasked with supporting them. This meeting of ATCMN Wales will explore the issue in detail, looking at the problems for both the public and the private sector.
