We are facing the third consecutive year of disruption to Christmas trade., In 2020, COVID effectively cancelled Christmas on the high street as the Alpha variant swept Scotland and undermined the Golden Quarter. In 2021, Omicron dampened demand at the worst possible time just as businesses were preparing for a busy December trade, While the virus still circulates, it is another problem that threatens to keep people away from the high street….. the cost-of-living crisis. Wage increases are not keeping pace with steep inflation in food, drink and energy contributing to one of the biggest falls in living standards in a generation, exacerbated by the recent UK Government fiscal policy that has added volatility to the cost of borrowing. It leaves many businesses fearful that 2022 may not now be the year that Christmas returns.
