APPG for Town Centres: The Evolution of the Landlord-Tenant Relationship
When: 10am to 11am, Thursday 28th April Where: Virtual, via Zoom. Click here to register. One relationship above all others has governed the health of the high street. The engagement between landlord and tenant has been fundamental to local economies for decades. Following years of strain on this relationship with the emergence of online shopping, the pandemic has completely rewritten the rules of engagement. The overnight accumulation of debt that has threatened occupier and owner alike means we have transitioned from an era of upward only rental reviews to greater flexibility in rents (including the greater use of turnover based rents). The landlord tenant relationship has definitely transformed, but to what extent? What does this evolution like? What implications does this have for the future of the high street? What progress has been made in dealing with the COVID-19 debt mountain that threatened the survival of businesses and the property industry? This meeting of the APPG for Town Centres will be chaired by Stephen Hammond MP.
