For both the UK and Ireland, elections are on the horizon. For both the UK and Ireland, the pressure to solve the housing crisis will see housing policies come under intense scrutiny.
A recent Irish Times article underlined the pressure on Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien, in delivering Ireland’s Housing for All scheme. However, it is an article in last weekend’s Sunday Times that has lit the blue touch paper for the 2024 Place Management Conference.
Levelling Up Secretary, Michael Gove, outlined plans to accelerate the delivery of housing in towns and cities across England. Amongst these measures reported to be an expansion of permitted development rights which allows property owners to convert shops, offices and other commercial uses to residential without planning permission.
With high residential prices triggered by a shortage of housing, there is a fear that some property owners may choose to cash in, reducing a town centre's commercial footprint permanently. And this could carry great risks for the future of the high street if conversions do not include sufficient planning.
We Need to Talk About Housing!
The 2024 Place Management Conference will bring together a range of industry experts from different fields for a frank discussion on whether delivering homes will ultimately come at the expense of the high street.
