Practice - The Bristol Promenade
The Bristol Promenade
The City Centre Promenade was designed to create a high quality
pedestrian and cycling route linking Broadmead to the new
harbourside developments. It has been successful in creating a series
of new, intensively used public spaces in the heart of the city and
reducing traffic flows through the centre by 18 percent. The scheme
provides a pleasant pedestrian environment, protected from traffic
under a cover of plane trees. French limestone is used for both
paving and walling, with stainless steel furniture to reflect its
contemporary design and reduce maintenance. Tactile guidance
routes have been incorporated to assist blind users to navigate the
busy space. Lighting levels and the space around taxi rank are also greatly improved.
