Arts Council England is the national development agency for the arts
in England. As an independent body, we distribute public money from
government and the National Lottery to artists and arts organisations.
Between 2005 and 2008, we are investing £1.7 billion of public
funds. This is the bedrock of support for the arts in England.
Our vision is to promote the arts at the heart of national life, reflecting
England’s rich and diverse cultural identity.
We believe that the arts have the power to transform lives and communities,
and to create opportunities for people throughout the country.
Our agenda for 2006 – 2008 has six priorities:
- Taking part in the arts
- Children and Young People
- The creative economy
- Vibrant communities
- Internationalism
- Celebrating diversity
We believe the arts can be used to help with issues of health, crime
education and social inclusion. We are establishing partnerships with
a range of national, regional and local organisations and projects
that are working to the same agenda. The involvement of art and artists
can help tackle many of the issues that Business Improvement Districts
(BIDs) face.
As well as benefiting businesses, this allows artists to explore new
environments and develop their art form, whilst providing income opportunities.
